Leave
Exercise Explained
It’s Very important for our dogs to know to leave things alone when we tell them to.
The reason for this is their safety more than anything. Just because something is in reach, it doesn't mean they can have it. For the target may be be:
- Something dangerous
if ingested
such as a sharp object, poisonous food;
- Something gross and very inappropriate such as fox / cow / sheep faeces or dead animals ;
- A developing obsessive compulsive
behaviour
such as picking up stones and sticks,
- Preventing them to meet and greet the wrong people people
or dogs
;
- Chasing cyclists, cats, etc;
But this exercise needs to be very well executed for our pets to succeed, and don’t get them confused with different commands.
It's important to understand that there is a big difference between the Leave and Wait commands.
With Wait they get the target – say Wait, put food on the floor and let the dog have have it when you get eye contact, or when you’re happy with the time he has been patient for (always maintaining eye contact)–; while with Leave , they don't get the target – say Leave, put food on the floor and treat from your hand when you get eye contact, or when you’re happy with the time he has been patient for (always maintaining eye contact)–.
It’s very important that during the Leave exercise, the dog never gets the target on the floor. Maybe while you’re training, think of the food as a knife you don’t want your dog to start playing with, and keep that in mind so you don’t let him get to it.
Tips to succeed are:
- Keep a good safe distance between the
dog and the target food,
- Keep the lead short but loose (just in
case they decide to lunge)
- Have two types of food, one being low
value and one being high value. The low value will go on the floor to target,
while the high value is the treat that comes from you.
After the dog starts avoiding the food to stay with you – looking at you –, you want to bring the dog to a heel to make him/her walk away from the target food.
Overtime Leave becomes a successful recall as it is taught in very short steps, maintaining a high level of success every time.
